LGBT Youth D&G

LGBT Youth Dumfries & Galloway

LGBT Youth Scotland is a national charity for LGBTI young people aged 13–25 year olds across the country. They deliver the LGBT Charter programme to schools, organisations and businesses.

Their vision is that Scotland is the best place to grow up for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and intersex young people.

Their mission is to play a leading role in the provision of quality youth work to LGBTI young people that promotes their health and well being and to be a valued and influential partner in LGBTI equality and human rights.

Every year LGBT Youth Scotland delivers over 800 youth groups and 1500 one-to-one support sessions. They also provide training for teachers and student teachers, helping them to support LGBTI pupils and stamp out homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying in schools.

In Dumfries and Galloway, Spectrum is a LGBT social youth group for 13-25 year olds. Contact Youth Worker Julie-Ann Lyons for more information.

Since 2015, LGBT Youth Scotland in Dumfries and Galloway have carried out an annual survey in order to understand more about young people’s views on the experiences of LGBT Young people living in the region. The most recent survey in 2019 reported an increase in the number of schools in D&G who were including LGBT identities as part of the school curriculum and calendar. However, the responses from pupils tell us that much more needs to be done to challenge homophobic, biphobic and transphobic language and bullying in D&G schools.

LGBT Youth Scotland can provide training and support to teachers to develop confidence and skills to improve this aspect of school life and as a result, improve LGBT young peoples’ experience in school.
