BRAIN TUMOUR RISK
Hormonal contraception and rare brain tumours
The College of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare (CoSRH) has released a statement regarding the use of progestogens and the risk of intracranial meningioma.
Recent research suggests that some hormonal contraceptives may be linked to a very small increase in the risk of a rare, usually non-cancerous brain tumour (meningioma). The overall risk is low, and most people do not need to change their contraception. Some types, including the contraceptive injection and certain pills, may carry a slightly higher risk, especially with long-term use. If you have concerns, or have ever had a meningioma, please contact us on 0345 702 3687 weekdays 8.30am – 11am and 1pm – 3.30pm
